Cops arrest factory worker for posting seditious remarks on social media
GEORGE TOWN, April 27 — A factory worker who allegedly posted offensive and vulgar comments against a religion was arrested around midnight today, Penang police have said.
The 26-year-old man had allegedly posted a comment that was seditious and had insulted a religion using vulgar words.
Penang Police Chief Comm Datuk Abdul Ghafar Rajab said the police received a tip-off on the Facebook posting through Whatsapp at 10.39pm on April 25.
“The north east district criminal investigation division managed to track the suspect and he was arrested at 12.15am today,” he said in a statement issued today.
The police seized a smartphone along with its SIM card in the arrest.
“We are now conducting a thorough investigation into this case and I call on all parties not to give any comments that could cause any racial or religious disharmony and dispute,” he said.
The police are investigating the case under Section 4 (1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 298 of the Penal Code for posting seditious remarks and causing religious disharmony.
